Painting with Soft Pastels-Everything You Need to Know

July 13, 2019 - July 14, 2019

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS WORKSHOP WILL NOT BE RUNNING DUE TO LACK OF SIGNUPS.  Check out Lori Goll’s Thursday Evening Pastel Class coming this fall, registration available very soon.

Saturday/ Sunday | 10 am – 4:00 pm

A Workshop with local artist Lori Simmerman Goll

Have you been wanting to try your hand using soft “chalk” pastels?  Have you tried them and then put them away in frustration?  I assure you, you’re not alone.  This workshop is suited for all levels of artists…from beginners to experienced artists wanting to learn about the magical medium of soft pastels.  No matter your style…realistic, impressionistic, abstract, etc, pastels provide a vibrant, portable, and versatile medium from which you can make beautiful paintings.  The Two-Day experience is recommended, but if you have a scheduling conflict, there is a 1-day option for Saturday.

Day 1  (Saturday)

Lori will discuss and demonstrate different brands of soft pastels, various substrates, underpainting techniques, framing and storage options, studio safety, online and retail resources, plein air setups, etc.   You will be able to try out different types of pastels on different surfaces to learn and feel their individual characteristics, blendability, texture, etc.  Lori will provide seascape photos for reference but you are welcome to bring your own reference photo.  Each student will create a small painting to take home.

Day 2  (Sunday)

Students will delve deeper into different wet and dry underpainting choices, including charcoal value, complimentary color, alcohol or gamsol-brushed, and watercolor underpaintings.  Lori will also discuss the importance of planning your compositions using thumbnail value (notan) sketches and methods of transferring your subject matter onto your paper or board.  You’ll work from life (still life setups) in the morning.  In the afternoon, the subject matter will be animals and the depiction of hair and fur.  Lori will provide photo references but you are welcome to bring your own.

Supply List

1.   The largest set of soft pastels (not OIL pastels) you are willing to purchase*.  Pastels do not blend like paint, thus, More Colors = Less Frustration.  Pastels are rather expensive, but if you decide you don’t like them you can probably sell them on Craigslist or eBay for almost what you paid for them.  For beginners, Lori recommends the 90 or 120 Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison, or Schminke  Half Stick sets.  Half stick sets give you twice the colors for the money.  Check Amazon, Dakota Art Pastels or Dick Blick for the best deals.  Another option, particularly if you are bringing your own reference photo, is to take that photo and visit Plaza Art Materials in Fairfax, and pick and choose several open stock pastels with which to paint your subject.  Open stock pastels are full sticks and usually run around $3-5 per stick!    Please don’t buy the student grade (Artists Loft, etc) pastels from Michael’s.  These sticks are mainly chalk with low quality dyes which will fade over time and aren’t as vibrant as pure pigment.  You are welcome to contact Lori (lorigoll@verizon.net) with any questions regarding the workshop or supplies.
2.  Sanded Pastel Paper or boards.  Please know that if you buy the Canson pad of “Pastel Paper” at Michael’s, you will not be able to do any wet underpainting techniques on this paper as it will buckle.  I recommend pads of UArt sanded paper which can handle dry or wet underpaintings.  If you do not wish to purchase these, you can pay Lori a supply fee of $5 for one-day or $10 for two-days.

3.  Lori will have these items but you may want to purchase your own:  masking tape, baby wipes, latex gloves, and paper towels.*The School has one large set of pastels to share/supplement your set if you choose to buy a smaller set.

Saturday Only:   $99
Saturday and Sunday:   $198
