Floral Still Lifes with Robert Johnson
December 3 - December 5$400
Saturday, December 4 &
Sunday, December 5
Class limited to 9 students
The paintings of nationally-acclaimed artist Robert Johnson evoke a newfound appreciation for the power and elegance of work done in the classical tradition. This workshop will present the principles underlying this approach to art that have been passed along for the last five centuries from master to apprentice, teacher to student, and artist to artist.
The Workshop will begin with a still life demonstration Friday evening to acquaint the students with the instructors approach to painting. During the demonstration the instructor will address concepts involved in setting up a good and paintable still life, issues of composition, materials, values, colors , edges, brushstrokes etc. The instructor will be available to answer questions throughout the demonstration.
During the next 2 days, the students will establish their own set ups. The instructor will be available to assist if needed. Students may also paint the instructors demonstration set up if they wish.
Students should be prepared to start at least three paintings of suggested sizes not larger than 16×20 during the workshop. The instructor will offer individual critiques as the paintings progress. Emphasis will be on creating a powerful and aesthetically compelling painting with emphasis on artistic design, understanding of values, the importance of edges, expressive brushstrokes, and an effective us of color.
