Summer 8b – Photography for Middle & High Schoolers

August 2 - August 6

$275

Ages 12-18  |  1:30-4:30pm  M-F
Instructor: Joe Willmore

This 5-session, 1-week in-person summer camp is for middle and high schoolers. Participants will socially distance, wear masks, and observe Covid protocols. This program is for both students who want to learn how to use a camera as well as those who are looking to build their portfolio. This summer camp is very interactive and hands-on. Students will take lots of photos, receive and give critiques, learn about key concepts and photographic genres, and be very active. A typical class will involve some brief instruction on a concept (like composition or lighting), discussion about shooting a specific type of photography (like portraits or sports), and then rotation by students among stations (where they shoot a specific challenge like: flowers, or products in a light tent, or chiaroscuro) and each class will involve sharing photos and critique. There will be some sitting and then some designated moving around every class. Depending upon weather and topics for that session, we may go outside for some photography.

Students enrolling in this program should have some kind of camera (DSLR, film, mirrorless, even a point-and-shoot) that is functional for the first class. They should also have the ability to post photos that they take online (I’ll set up a Dropbox account they can upload photos). Instruction will be individual and assignments will be adapted to individuals. So experienced and novice photographers are all welcome.

About the instructor: Joe Willmore is an Asst. Coordinator for the Shutterbugs Meetup Group with nearly 4,000 members where he arranges and often facilitates workshops (in person and on-line). He’s a very experienced online instructor and has done a wide range of photography workshops and sessions online. He has lots of experience working with middle and high schoolers on a range of instructional topics. He’s the author of “Hummingbird: Attracting and Photographing Hummingbirds of the Mid-Atlantic.”

All Camps are IN-PERSON.  We will follow all current Covid Policies in accordance with CDC and the state of Virginia during Summer Camps.
